Ferry Tales Creative Writing Workshops
Free (booking essential)
maggie@ferrytales.org
Ferry Tales is a community-based project which links the Isle of Wight to mainland ports, through the inter-connection of verbal, aural and visual arts. Poets, Robyn Bolam and Lydia Fulleylove and singer-songwriters, Paul Armfield and Dom Prag will involve groups – from ferry travellers to the socially and physically isolated – in making songs and poems exploring significant arrivals and departures in their lives, using commissioned photographs by Mark Lanigan. These, with writings and a soundtrack, will be showcased in exhibitions and events at a mainland port and on the Island. Lydia, guest poet, Maggie Sawkins, Robyn and Dom will also run workshops at several venues, mainland and Island.

PEOPLE LIKE US
People like us we didn’t go abroad.
We went to the beach on a charabanc.
There were so many people you had to fight for space.
We sat with our clothes on. Chocker block.
They didn’t have tights in those days.
The deckchairs used to end up upside down.
Two bob for an hour. All day for a pound.
We used to buy a Mr Whippy in a wafer.
We were easily pleased.
My mum knitted me a two piece
and when I went for a swim —
the weight of the water made it drop!
You could hear the mums and dads shouting:
‘Don’t kick the sand over there!’
What pleasure was it really?
It was a big event to go down to the sea.

UNSENT LETTERS
A workshop facilitated by Maggie Sawkins in partnership with the Good Mental Health Co-op.
The act of transforming thoughts and feelings into the written word is a surprisingly powerful way of assimilating and learning from past experience. This workshop will encourage participants to explore and express difficult thoughts and feelings through the medium of letter writing. Therapeutic letters are not necessarily letters that need to be sent; feelings can be released by tearing up the letter at a later date. Therapeutic writing can help us recuperate and claim lost parts of ourselves and can lead us to a place of understanding. This workshop is for those interested in personal, and professional, development and will provide participants with transferable skills.
Standard cost: £87 per place
EARLY BIRD OFFER – Save £10 if you book before Friday 2 May
All courses start at 9:30am and finish at 4:30pm, and are held at the Oasis Wellness Centre, Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, Hampshire, PO6 3LY.
