Interview with Melanie Manchot

‘Suffering becomes a beautiful thing – a story.’

Last month my friend and myself were interviewed by the artist Melanie Manchot about our experiences of being mothers of children affected by addiction. The interviews are included in the ‘The 12 Project’, a radio documentary, devised and produced in conjunction with Brighton’s RadioReverb.

The programme explores ideas around addiction and recovery through a range of creative practices, including poetry and story telling. For my part I talk about the stark reality behind the writing of ‘Zones of Avoidance’, my live literature production which won the 2013 Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry.

‘Zones of Avoidance’  is being performed at The Birley Centre, Eastbourne on 28 June 2016. It is part of Melanie Manchot’s major new exhibition, People Places Propositions, which  includes the culmination of the UK tour for Twelve (2015), the artist’s acclaimed multi-channel video installation work exploring the intimate stories, rituals and ruptures of lives spent in addiction and recovery.

Andrew Waterhouse and the Seventh Syllable

Poets come and go. They enter your life with their poems. They get older. They die.

You don’t actively miss them. You move, as they say, on. Besides, you have poems of your own to write.

But sometimes it’s not so easy. You think of certain writers with pain and regret. You go back to their poems and there’s the poet, still inside the lines, circling round and round and looking out at you, like a goldfish behind glass. You want them to explain themselves, but the only explanation they can or will give is right here. Right here in the poems. And you still don’t get it.

Or this is how it is for me with Andrew Waterhouse, who died (it was a suicide) in 2001. I go back…
